MEMBERS CODE OF ETHICS

(1) Members will properly House, Feed, Water and Exercise all dogs under their care and arrange for appropriate veterinary attention if and when required.

(2) Members will not allow any of their dogs to roam at large or to cause a nuisance to neighbours or those carrying out official duties.

(3) Members will ensure that their dogs wear properly tagged collars and shall be kept fully leashed or under effective control when away from home.

(4) Members will clean up after their dogs in any public place and anywhere their dogs are being exhibited.

(5) Before breeding a litter serious and equal consideration should be given to type, temperament, health and soundness. In the choice of breeding stock it should always be borne in mind that aggression and nervousness form no part of a Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever's temperament and character.

(6) Members agree only to sell puppies and older dogs where there is reasonable expectation of a happy and healthy life and will help with the re homing of a dog if the initial circumstances change.

(7) Each purchaser of a Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever puppy should be provided at the time of sale with a pedigree, diet sheet and information about training, worming, inoculations and details of the Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever Club of UK. They should also be provided, where applicable, either at the time of sale or as soon as possible thereafter with any necessary documentation for the Kennel Club registration. No puppy that is of unregistered or partly unregistered parentage should be sold without the buyer being made aware that they will be unable to register it on the Kennel Club Register.

(8) Puppies should never knowingly be sold to laboratories, pet shops, dealers in dogs or people known to sell puppies to any of the above, nor should stud services be provided for such persons. ( A dealer is defined as any person who regularly buys puppies in the hope of selling them for profit. A person who buys a puppy as an agent for a known individual is not necessarily a dealer.) A puppy should never be offered as a prize in a raffle or competition.

(9) Members will not knowingly misrepresent the characteristics of the breed or falsely advertise dogs nor mislead any person regarding the quality of a dog.

(10) Members are encouraged to submit stock to the KC/BVA Eye and Hip Scheme and to the Optigen screening test for genetic identification of pcrd –PRA / CEA and make available copies of the relevant documents to the club secretary for inclusion into the official club records.

(11)  Members should submit breeding stock for KC/BVA Eye and Hip Scheme and to the Optigen screening test for genetic identification of pcrd –PRA / CEA prior to mating. Eye tests should be annual and up to date for breeding stock at the time of each breeding.

(12)  Members who breed should provide puppy buyers with copies of the relevant health clearances for both dam and sire –i.e. hip score, Optigen results, and up to date eye certificate.

(13) No bitch should be required to have more than four litters and no bitch should he bred from at successive seasons unless a period of more than twelve months has lapsed. No bitch should be mated before the age of two years, nor after the age of eight years, except under special circumstances. Before a bitch is mated due regard should be given to her general condition and fitness and, in the case of second or subsequent litters, her previous breeding history (including ease of whelping) etc.

(14) All breeding should be aimed at the improvement of the breed. No Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever who is Unregistered should be used for breeding, as a Brood Bitch or Stud Dog at any time. Members should do everything in their power to discourage breeding from clearly inferior specimens and those members who own stud dogs are advised to refuse stud services to such specimens.

(15) It is the right of the breeder to impose any restrictions on the litter.

(16) No member should breed a litter unless they have the time and facilities to devote proper care and attention to the rearing of the puppies and to the well being of the dam. No member should provide stud services unless they are fully satisfied that the owner of the bitch has such time and facilities.

(17) No puppies should be exported before they are fully inoculated in accordance with country of destination import regulations or before the age of three months, unless they are traveling in the personal care of the purchaser or known representative. Puppies should never be sold to countries where they are not protected by anti-cruelty laws. (if in doubt consult the ministry of agriculture, RSPCA or the Kennel Club.)

(18) Prospective buyers of puppies should he carefully screened for suitability and should be fully advised of the characteristics of the Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever as a breed, stressing the necessity for care, grooming and ample exercise. Puppies should not be sold to homes where they will be left on their own all day.

(19) No puppy which has any physical defect or which shows any definite departure from the breed standard should be sold without the buyer being made fully aware of such defect or departure and its possible consequences. Members should only sell puppies which, to the best of their knowledge and belief, are in good health at the time of sale.

(20) Advertising by members should be as factual as possible, containing no misleading exaggeration or unfounded implication of superiority. Members should also refrain from making unfair or untrue statements about the dogs or practices of others.

(21) It should be impressed on buyers that they should contact the breeder in the event of any problem arising with the dog. Breeders should make every effort to be of assistance in these circumstances.

(22) Officers and Committee members of the Club are always ready and willing to do their best to help members with any query or problems.
