This was numerically a very pleasing Toller entry and I am very grateful for the support of all the exhibitors who attended. My judging of Gundogs over more than 30 years has never been approached as a pure "beauty" competition but primarily as "fitness for purpose", can they do the job they were developed to do and what influence does my placings have on breeders' choice of stock and aims. Retrievers have a defined role in their name, they are not coated ornaments. Functionally they require construction, scope, strength, speed and agility to fulfil their role in the field, temperament, instinct and intelligence are also vital components. When we look specifically to the Toller its size, head, ear set, coat and distinctive tail and carriage added to its functionality. Small, weedy specimens lacking in strength of bone, undercoat, muscle and substance (and I do not mean fat), weak, narrow, short and insubstantial muzzles, incapable of carrying a Mallard Duck, will never make for useful retrievers in the field. From this perspective I was not entirely happy with the quality on display on the last occasion I judged the breed in England some eighteen months ago. However, with exception of the odd small exhibit and one slightly mismarked, the turnout today, I have to remark, could not have been more different. The quality of the best dog line up truly took my breath away. It is a beacon of hope for the future of this lovely breed in the UK and a tribute to the efforts of the dedicated breeders present. The bitches on show were also a marked improvement on my last appointment. It was a privilege to assess each and every dog entered. I congratulate you all and wish you continued success in your endeavours.

1stPowley DANEHAVEN TUNULIC
The star of the entry for me at just 11 months of age and possessing many of the qualities I have highlighted above at such a tender age. Quality and presence are the immediate impressions of this youngster and he easily dominated this class. He has outstanding substance for his age, beautifully covered though not to excess and cleanly presented, standing on the most wonderful quality bone and glorious firm, compact feet. His head is his joy. A really soft, willing expression, lovely stop and the most delightful head proportions, broadening across the skull already and a muzzle not only with ample length, so often lacking, but also breadth and finish with well padded lips. Breed balance standing filled the eye, excellent spring of ribcage and depth of body for his age, short couplings and plenty of muscle tone in the forequarters and hindquarters already. A rich, fulsome coat, bushy tail with a happy and delightful breed carriage. A really sound mover for one so young, springy and jaunty as the standard demands. His natural confidence and intelligence held him in very good stead in the group ring after being awarded Best of breed and I would rate him to have a great deal to offer the breed, provided he maintains breed desired proportions I consider he could truly leave his mark in the future.
2ndWestwood & Johnson TOLLYHIMMEL STICKY TOFFEE
A very typical nine month old dog which looked small set against the mature winner but who also possesses many fine qualities. Very well angulated throughout, strong construction, good bone and feet. Excellent spring of ribcage, pleasingly well coupled and presented in good coat with typical tail and carriage. Attractive coat and eye colour, a very sound mover.

1stBurchell TIVALAKE JINGLE BELL ROCK
A pleasing young dog, just out of puppy, with a well balanced, typical head, alert expression and correct stop, good to see plenty of muzzle on a Roman nose. Firm, true front, typical outline and well made throughout with scope and frame to grow on. Plenty of length of leg and reasonable depth of body, ribcage could have a little more spring. Needs to strengthen and come up on the pasterns which were rather loose on the move. Moved soundly overall with typical tail carriage and, when he muscles up and tightens generally, should have a promising future.

1stPowley DANEHAVEN SEVERN
This striking, medium sized, five and a half year old dog was one of the darker coated in the entry and his overall balance and outline, splendid angulation and muscletone shone through in his construction and condition. He has true poise when standing and portrays as a very honest retriever, kind and willing to do a days work in a dedicated and keen manner. His skull is broad and well shaped with plenty of strength and length in the muzzle and correct stop, eye rims tight and well shaped with lovely expression and true eye colour. Excellent straight, true front, spring of ribcage and depth of body, strong over the loin with bushy tail carried well. Muscled hindquarters with deep second thigh and a very good mover.
2ndMoxham SANWANN TOP SECRET
A strongly built young dog rising two years of age, very good head proportions, plenty of strength in the muzzle, lovely eye colour and expression. Excellent shoulder placement giving nice reach of neck, coat in shining condition with splendid muscling in the hindquarters, hard and firm with second thigh well developed and good bend of stifles. Rather long in the couplings and heavy in ear but otherwise typical and moved acceptably. Well handled.

1stWestwood & Johnson CAN/IR SH CH LITTLERIVER'S COLONIAL BOY WITH TOLLYHIMMEL (IMP CAN)
A classic type rising seven years of age but retaining plenty of substance, quality and muscletone. Typical slightly wedge shaped head, correct eye and breed expression, plenty of length of muzzle. Strong bone on a pleasing frame, reasonably tight feet, excellent spring of ribcage and very strong and muscled across the loins, wonderful short couplings with slight tuck up. Good bend of stifles, true and full tail and carriage, moved soundly with drive. Reserve Best Dog. Congratulations.
2ndPowley DANEHAVEN DETROIT
Brother to the winner of post graduate with the same outstanding qualities of breed type, striking outline and, in his case, presence in the ring. Another Toller so very well made and constructed that he has perfect balance when standing and the natural ability of a showman. His expression is mellow and yet focused on the work in hand, handsome head, beautifully balanced and strong without any exaggeration, ears correct in every way, neck strong and sweeping into well laid shoulders, deep set and elbows tight supported on strong bone and well arched toes on good pads. Deep bodied with well sprung ribs and firm level topline, with scope and length in the body, helps to add to a picture of a thoroughly well proportioned Toller. On the day I felt he lacked the body condition and muscle tone I have assessed on him in the past as he rises towards six years of age. His well bent stifles remain a feature and hocks turn neither in nor out and I still consider his movement to be exceptionally good and an example of how the breed should track.

A happy and lively five year old Toller presented in good condition, super muscled hindquarters with developing second thigh which has improved his movement from the last time I judged him, pleasing head, eye and stop. Good spring of rib and correct bone on firm feet, good depth of body, mature topline and strong across the loins. Well carried feathered tail with white tip.
2ndRogers EUSANIT TAKE IT EASY
A mature five year old with a pleasing breed outline, balanced head, presented in good condition, a correct, clean stop, good spring of rib, plenty of bone, well angulated shoulders with reach of neck, good turn of stifles. Excellent level topline, moved acceptably with correct tail carriage.

1stParr DANEHAVEN PELLY ON KYMIN
Litter sister to the BOB dog, won the class on type, head and expression and overall condition. Correct eye colour, well sprung ribcage, nicely bodied for a puppy, loins well covered and strong, excellent muscled hindquarters for her age with developing second thigh. Balanced throughout with good depth of body for her age and firm topline. Moved with drive carrying her white tipped tail in true Toller style.
2ndPowley DANEHAVEN YAMASKA
A balanced overall outline on this eleven month old bitch, head somewhat long and narrow at present and needs time to break and fill. Good sturdy bone, well sprung ribcage and firm across the loins. Rather down on pasterns but stifles well angulated. Moved acceptably with typical tail carriage.

1stPowley HOLLYMIST AMAZONITE
Typical and compact fourteen months old youngster, presented in good coat with a lively tail carriage and moving with drive. Head needs to continue to develop and strengthen and I would wish to see more bone and strength overall.
2ndMorgan REDAURORA COMET'S CHRISTMAS
Presented in first class body and condition just out of puppy, with excellent spring of ribcage and strong across the loins and possessing well muscled hindquarters. Somewhat short in muzzle for me and rather cheeky which detracted from the head and expression, another bitch which in my opinion would benefit from stronger bone. Moved very soundly.

Post Graduate Bitch (8 entries, 4 absent)

1stPowley DANEHAVEN RED ROCK
A four year old, typical, compact example of the breed with attractive outline and correct expression, intelligent and alert, pleasing eye colour. Strong bone, firm, tight feet, well sprung ribcage, excellent depth of body and well coupled with tuck up. Well bent stifles, moved very typically with drive and a springy gait. Excelled in coat and condition and one of the few possessing double coat on the day, correct tail carriage. Reserve best bitch. Congratulations.
2ndClark DECOYMANS PIPER TANSY AT FLANOVA
Rising three years of age, compact and notable for spring of ribcage, super depth of body and level, firm topline, strong couplings with tuck up. Shoulders well angulated with excellent straight, true front though she does not need to carry any more weight. Presented in pleasing coat of attractive colour, moved acceptably with drive. Head slightly weak in proportions for me.

1stPowley DANEHAVEN EFFINGHAM OFF KYMIN
Consistent with the winning breed type before me today at almost three years of age, pleasing balanced head, slightly wedge shaped with good proportions, correct eye shape and eye dark colour enhancing a kind and alert expression. Strong bone supported on particularly tight feet, toes well arched, ribcage well sprung. In fine coat and condition, good tail and carriage. Moved acceptably. Best bitch. Congratulations.
2ndWestwood & Johnson IR SH CH ALLIANCE DE LA VIE SO FANTASTIC WITH TOLLYHIMMEL (IMP NLD)
Pleasing breed type, a substantial, well built five year old, head has improved in breadth and strength since I last judged this bitch, with stop correct if eye rather light. Excellent spring of rib and firm topline, but not best held on times, good depth of body, strong over the loins and well developed hindquarters. Presentation could have been better which held her back from winning today, long lengths of her dead undercoat were showing through, but she impressed by being one of the few in the entry to possess undercoat. It was her sound, speedy and driving movement that again leaves an impression of power and drive, though possibly her gait could be slightly more springy and jaunty. A happy shower with very typical Toller tail carriage.
