My thanks go to the Officers and Committee in offering this judging appointment at National Gundog along with my stewards on the day who kept the ring running smoothly given the late start in judging we made the groups with ease I thought. Special thanks also must go to all those exhibitors who took the time and effort to enter during these difficult financial times it was a fantastic entry for the breed and truly humbled by your turn out! Furthermore, it was truly amazing to see a good selection of my chosen winner’s progress later that day in their respective groups, my thanks to those judges who thought so highly of my choices on the day. I witnessed not one but two tollers place highly in their respective Groups, congratulations on Puppy Group 2 & RBPIS and Special Beginner Group 4, along with making up another new champion in the breed too, all in one judging appointment a true promotional showcase for the breed in the public eye. Some breed specific faults are appearing in the ring, so note to breeders to keep the breed true to the standard as we move forwards, height is definitely going upwards (note smallest of the retriever breeds) and witnessed both tiny ears and folded ears appearing too. Again a few rye mouths and overall construction issues, its quality that we need to maintain in the up and coming youngsters to carry this breed forwards. A lot of new exhibitors coming into the breed who also need more training, but overall, a promising future for the breed. It was also pleasing to see some quality plainer and red examples (a change from the typical orange) finally coming through the ranks too, demonstrating the diversity in allowed colours/markings within the standard.
